Trimming dog fur made easy
Prevent skin irritation and eczema!
Veterinarians and dog owners disagree on whether their beloved four-legged friend's coat should be cut, shaved, or trimmed . Since your dog's coat not only looks good but primarily regulates body temperature, you should carefully consider this step. Dogs with coats that are too long or very thick can suffer, especially in the summer months. For this reason, it may be advisable to trim their coats regularly . However, trimming their fur for aesthetic reasons or to follow trends is not recommended. If you want to trim your four-legged friend's coat, you'll find out what you need to consider in today's blog article.
Trimming involves only plucking dead and loose hair from your dog's coat. You can trim the coat either with your fingers or with a special tool. If you choose a trimmer blade, however, you should have some practice using it. Regular trimming is even recommended for some dog breeds. These include, for example, breeds with rough coats, such as:
- Terrier,
- schnauzer
- and wire-haired dachshunds.
In breeding these breeds, increased emphasis was placed on ensuring their coats provide exceptional protection against wet and cold weather. The normal shedding of fur, which we know from other dog breeds in spring and autumn, has been virtually eliminated. Dogs of these breeds are often used for hunting. With this coat structure, they can serve as hunting dogs year-round. Since they can easily overheat, especially in summer, it is advisable to regularly remove the dead topcoat . Excess and matted fur can lead to skin irritation, inflammation, and even eczema.
Expert tip: Regular trimming stimulates coat growth.
You can remove the undercoat by simply brushing out the dead hair . A regular dog brush is usually sufficient. You should trim the coat no more than once a month. This way, you can be sure that you are not compromising the natural protective barrier . If the protective barrier is damaged, we recommend our emmi®-pet HOCL Hoof, Skin, and Wound Hydrogel . After trimming, we recommend brushing the coat thoroughly.
Shearing dog fur made easy
Breed and coat structure determine whether shearing is advisable!
Unlike trimming, clipping fur isn't as easy. Ideally, you should make an appointment with a dog groomer and have them explain the clipping process to you in detail. If you're considering clipping it yourself, you should definitely consider the following points:
- Before each clipping, you must brush the coat thoroughly. Any matting, heavy dirt, and knots must be removed from the coat before clipping.
- You should also carefully consider the right length. Experts recommend a hair length of no less than 9 millimeters.
- In any case, make sure your dog feels comfortable before and during the clipping process.
- Always position the clippers in the direction of coat growth and never work against the grain.
- You should definitely cut particularly sensitive areas with scissors.
After clipping, you should brush your dog thoroughly again. This allows you to check whether the cut is even. For thick undercoats, we recommend using a special undercoat brush. For some breeds, a thorough bath after clipping is advisable. This soothes the skin and removes any remaining hair . If you find inflamed areas or minor wounds on your dog's skin, we recommend disinfecting and treating them with our emmi®-pet wound solution .
