How to properly treat small wounds and scratches

Kleine Wunden und Kratzer richtig versorgen

Every dog owner is familiar with minor scratches and wounds. Whether from wandering through dense bushes or poorly chosen walking routes with abrasive surfaces, minor injuries and wounds are a daily occurrence for both dog and owner.

But even minor and seemingly harmless injuries require first aid. In today's blog post, we'll explain how best to care for your four-legged friend's minor wounds and when a visit to the vet is necessary.

Even small wounds that initially appear inconspicuous, small, and harmless can become infected. Slight bleeding, for example, can indicate that deeper tissue is affected and the overlying skin layer is damaged. This fact alone makes cleaning, treating, and monitoring minor cuts and abrasions necessary.

For simple yet highly effective initial treatment of minor wounds, we recommend Vetericyn® VF +Plus Hydro-Gel. Combined with ultrasound technology, it promotes wound healing and eliminates harmful bacteria and microorganisms. Our emmi®-pet Coat Care Set is perfect as a starter kit for coat care, dental care, and treating minor wounds.

Promote wound healing with Vetericyn® VF +Plus Hydro-Gel

To effectively prevent infection from bacteria and harmful microorganisms, even in small wounds, every wound should be treated first and the healing process regularly monitored. Ultrasound technology and Vetericyn® VF +Plus Hydro-Gel promote wound healing.

For first aid, even small wounds and cuts should always be carefully examined and professionally cleaned as a first step. The animal should be placed in a calm position. The wound should be cleaned of dirt, grime, and blood using a clean cloth or sterile gauze. The actual size of the wound will then become apparent.

If a wound is bleeding, it should be stopped as quickly as possible, and only then should you begin cleaning it. Using scissors or a razor, the surrounding area should be free of any fur to prevent adhesions. After cleaning, the wound should be examined for any foreign bodies such as thorns or broken glass. Foreign bodies can ideally be removed with tweezers. A flashlight will provide good visibility.

Factual knowledge: Modern wound care for animals

Vetericyn® VF +Plus Hydro-Gel is a modern wound care product for pets of all kinds. It allows for the gentle cleansing and disinfection of heavily stressed skin areas and small wounds.

The secret behind Vetericyn® VF +Plus Hydro-Gel is ensuring an optimal moisture balance. The hydro-gel prevents adhesions between wound material and the wound. Combined with ultrasound, it promotes blood circulation and inhibits inflammation. The emmi®-pet Care ultrasound attachment is attached to the emmi®-pet handpiece and lightly moistened with water. The Vetericyn® VF +Plus Hydro-Gel is applied to the area to be treated. The switched-on device is held over the prepared wound. The application can be repeated as often as required.

Caution: Large wounds, heavily bleeding or gaping wounds, large foreign bodies, severely infected wounds, and a poor general condition of your pet should always be treated by a veterinarian. In these cases, and whenever you are unsure—after all, you know your pet best—you should waste no time and contact your veterinarian. Bite injuries should generally be treated by a veterinarian, as the risk of infection is significantly higher.
