Brush your dog’s teeth properly – with the dog toothbrush

Deinem Hund die Zähne richtig putzen – mit der Hundezahnbürste

You finally have it in your hands: your new dog toothbrush. Because by now you know that brushing your dog's teeth makes perfect sense and protects them from many unpleasant secondary diseases and countless visits to the vet. The best way to brush is with a dog toothbrush that's specifically designed for a dog's teeth. But how exactly do you use a dog toothbrush? And how do you brush your dog's teeth properly? Read on and find the answers to your questions.

Step 1: Getting used to the dog toothbrush

It's easiest, of course, if your dog has been introduced to a dog toothbrush since puppyhood, but even older dogs can easily be introduced to a dog toothbrush. All you need is calmness, patience, and regular training. Pay particular attention to positive reinforcement during training. If your dog associates the dog toothbrush with petting or treats, he'll get used to the unfamiliar device much faster and more easily.

The same goes for toothpaste. Let your dog sniff it and maybe even try it by placing a little on your finger.

Once you can easily use the dog toothbrush in your dog's mouth and he remains completely relaxed, you can start brushing his teeth properly.

Step 2: Using the dog toothbrush

First, the toothbrush should be moistened with toothpaste. In the case of the emmi-pet ultrasonic toothbrush, you should use a special toothpaste enriched with microbubbles. This directs the ultrasonic vibrations directly to the tooth.

It's best to start brushing your four-legged friend's side teeth on the outside. Simply pull the lips up with two fingers and hold the dog toothbrush against the teeth. If you don't have an ultrasonic toothbrush, you'll now be brushing mechanically, which some dogs may need to get used to. With the emmi®-pet, it's enough to hold the brush against each tooth – without any vibration or scrubbing.

After brushing the back teeth, move on to the front teeth. Avoid touching your dog's nose to prevent sneezing. You can simply wipe away any loose plaque with the brush.

Step 3: Tips and Tricks

These tips will make the application even easier:

  • Choose a dog toothbrush with the appropriate brush head size – correspondingly small for small dogs.
  • Make sure you use soft bristles to protect your gums.
  • Use a special dog toothpaste that your dog likes and that does not contain any harmful ingredients.
  • If your dog feels uncomfortable with conventional brushes, try the emmi®-pet ultrasonic toothbrush – without any scrubbing.
